Why Isn’t My Propane Tank Filled to 100%?

If you’ve ever had your propane tank filled and noticed that it wasn’t filled all the way to the top, you might be wondering why. At Virginia Propane, we often get asked: “Why isn’t my propane tank filled to 100%?” The short answer is safety, and it’s an industry standard designed to protect your home, property, and family.
Propane Expands with Temperature
One of the main reasons propane tanks are never filled completely full is because propane is a liquid that expands when it warms up. Just like water expands when it freezes, propane expands when the temperature rises. If a tank were filled to 100%, there would be no room for that expansion. This could create dangerous pressure inside the tank, potentially causing leaks or other safety issues.
That’s why propane delivery professionals only fill your tank to about 80% capacity. This extra space—known as “headspace”—allows propane to safely expand and contract with temperature changes.
The 80% Fill Rule
Every propane company, including Virginia Propane, follows what’s known as the 80% fill rule. For example:
A 500-gallon propane tank will typically hold around 400 gallons when “full.”
A 1,000-gallon tank will be filled with about 800 gallons of propane.
This is not an underfill—this is the safe, standard practice that ensures your propane system operates properly all year long.
Safety and Performance Benefits
By leaving that 20% cushion, your propane tank can:
Handle seasonal temperature changes without creating excessive pressure.
Deliver fuel safely and efficiently to your appliances.
Protect your tank, valves, and regulators from damage.
So, while it may look like your tank isn’t filled to the top, rest assured that it’s exactly where it should be for safety and performance.
